BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) — You might think of tornadoes as more of a threat to other parts of the country.

But the state with the largest number of confirmed tornadoes so far this year… is Ohio.

7News Reporter shares what the Belmont County EMA is urging its residents to do.

Code Red is a system that gets emergency alerts out to the public.

It sends them to your cell phone.

Unless you’ve registered for Code Red, all they’ve got is your home phone number.

And chances are, you may not even use your landline anymore or may not be home to get the call.

Ohio is leading the country with the most tornadoes, I believe roughly around 38, which is astronomical, you know. We’re not used to seeing that. In regards to Code Red, we use that system in Belmont County. We’re requesting that lives or works within the county to please register your cell phones to that address.

If the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, it will alert you with a call or text to your phone.

To sign up, log on to Belmont County 9-1-1’s web page, click on the link for Code Red, and fill out the form.

If you have trouble with that, call the 911 office, and they’ll help.

The non-emergency numbers are 740-699-0425 and 740-695-9104.
