Sensex Today Live Updates: Indian shares edged lower in early trade on Friday, as technology and automobile stocks declined amid weakness in other Asian markets, while investors awaited domestic inflation data.

Nifty's IT index, which firmed up 1.79% on Thursday, declined 0.51%, while the auto index fell 0.24%.

Market participants are awaiting the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data due later in the day. A Reuters poll showed India's retail inflation likely eased in July due to a fall in food and fuel prices but stayed well above the Reserve Bank of India's upper tolerance limit of 6% for a seventh consecutive month.

Broader Asian equities tracked Wall Street's overnight weakness as investors were jittery over uncertainty around the pace of interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve to tackle inflation despite some softness last month.

Indian market ended in positive after a highly volatile session. Today the market remained volatile as the market tracked the mixed global cues and ahead of retail inflation data which is going to be out at the end of the day. Despite rising rates of inflation, India is expected to have the fastest economic growth of any nation around the world in 2022 bringing back investors' confidence in the market. Foreign investors continue to remain the net buyers in the Indian market since the middle of July. Respite in commodity prices, decline in US inflation and expectation of a less hawkish stance by the US Federal Reserve are likely to drive the market in the near term. Continuous buying from foreign investors has supported the rupee and helped in improving the macro dynamics.

Indian rupee posts weekly loss, underperforms in Asia

The Indian rupee ended lower on Friday and down on week as likely one-time dollar outflows dragged the currency compared to stronger Asian peers that gained from softening U.S. inflation data. The partially convertible rupee traded in a tight range all day to end 0.03% lower at 79.6550 per dollar, compared to its previous close of 79.6350. The currency failed to capitalise on a weak dollar and shed 0.6% this week.By comparison, improved risk appetite and soft U.S. inflation print helped Asian peers perform better, including the onshore Chinese yuan, the Indonesian rupiah and the Singapore dollar that were firm between 0.3% to 1.5% this week.

MARKET VIEW: Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services

The ongoing market rally is being driven mainly by two factors: One, the steady decline in dollar index from above 109 to 105.26 now facilitating capital flows to emerging markets. Two, the return of FIIs into the Indian market, which has completely changed the market sentiments here. It is important to appreciate the fact that FIIs have made a complete turnaround in their strategy in India with sustained buying over the last 10 sessions. And yesterday's buy figure of Rs 2298 cr is the highest in several months. This, and the fact that India has the best growth story for this year and the next, will impart resilience to the market.

However, investors should exercise caution while chasing this rally since valuations are getting stretched.

Remain invested in high quality growth stocks ; don't chase 'cats and dogs'.
