The Beaver County Humane Society issued a call for information on the person(s) who threw away two Chihuahuas in a cardboard box in Monaca Heights. The dogs were discovered Monday and taken Tuesday morning to the Beaver County Humane Society's animal shelter in Center Township. Veterinary staff determined the dogs are males approximately 8 and 10 years of age and appeared to be in need of extensive veterinary care.“Our medical team discovered both dogs were loaded with fleas. In fact, the older male is missing fur along his back and tail from heavy flea infestation,” says Susan Salyards, Executive Director. “Along with that, they both have dental issues with the older one having periodontal disease. The younger male is not bearing weight on his right hind leg and will need x-rays of his leg and pelvis. We have started him on pain medication. The older male also has a possible tumor and an ulcer on his right eye.” The BCHS Humane Society Police Officer Mary Sparks asked anyone with information on who owned the abandoned dogs or the identities of the people who committed the crimes to call 724-775-5801 x110. A suspect convicted of animal cruelty or abuse could face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000 or both. “There is no reason whatsoever to dump puppies, kittens or any other animals where they are certain to die in this cold weather,” said Salyards. “Anyone can surrender unwanted animals at the BCHS where they’ll have an opportunity to find a good, loving home.”
