US Market Indexes Gain on Tuesday

Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite reach new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,590.83 for a gain of 160.50 points or 0.69%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,599.03 for a gain of 16.89 points or 0.65%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,862.48 for a gain of 71.76 points or 1.06%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.69 for a loss of -0.96 points or -9.01%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Corporate earnings helped stocks to gain on Tuesday. All three leading benchmarks reached new highs.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index increased to 0.65 from 0.36.
  • The Existing Home Sales Index increased 2.0% for the month, reported at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.48 million.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Apple (AAPL, Financial) 1.86%

Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) 1.44%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 1.41%

Visa (V, Financial) 1.36%

UnitedHealth (UNH, Financial) 1.12%

IBM (IBM, Financial) 0.96%

In the broad market, technology led gains. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.05% on Tuesday.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,518.89 for a gain of 15.49 points or 1.03%. The S&P 600 closed at 927.81 for a gain of 12.01 points or 1.31%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,246.68 for a gain of 93.19 points or 1.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,104.34 for a gain of 72.81 points or 0.73%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,858.96 for a gain of 11.75 points or 0.64%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,144.85 for a gain of 8.65 points or 0.76%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,541.79 for a gain of 10.60 points or 0.69%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,441.63 for a gain of 9.52 points or 0.66%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 683.08 for a gain of 1.87 points or 0.27%.
